est Gysla? Bishop of Bishop of The earliest reference to the von Diepholz is to the
nobleman Gottschalk von Diepholz, who was Bishop of Minden from
1097-1112, under opposition from a certain Widelo, who was “anti-bishop” until
1112 and took over as bishop proper from 1112 to 1119. Gottschalk was also
Bishop of Osnabrück from 1109-1119, apparently undisputed! Both military bishoprics which had been established by
Charlemagne in the 9th century "in an effort to secure control over
the Saxon wilderness of northern secular ruler of his own mini-states, including
rights of taxation and coinage and to hold a weekly market, as well as judicial powers
to enforce law and order. Burial stone in the romanesque “klosterkirch” at

The “Johanneskasten” can still 1443. be seen today in an old military tower, the Bucksturm. Dates don’t seem to match! 1424-1455 Grafen von Hoya wird 1441 der Graf Johann von Hoya durch Osnabrücker Bürger gefangengenommen. Für die Dauer von sechs Jahren wird er in einem Eichenkasten, dem sog. Johanneskasten inhaftiert. 1447 wird über Osnabrück, das zeitweilig von Bischof Johannes III., Graf zu Diepholz, unterstützt wurde, die Reichsacht verhängt und der Graf Johann von Hoya aus seiner Haft entlassen.
