THE ANNUAL DIRECTORIES

The Annual Directories, a large collection of which can be found in the Oriental and India Office Library (IOL), served as a gazetteer of social events and provide a fascinating insight into Calcutta society in the 19th century, as well as lists of residents in various parts of Bengal and the “Mofussil”. The listings are not exhaustive, are almost exclusively male, and are especially patchy prior to 1850. The following transcriptions focus mainly on the lists of residents, and although some announcements of births, marriages and deaths and other entries have also been noted where they have been found, these have not been checked on a systematic basis and there are doubtless more references contained in the directories - particularly in the latter half of the century. Although most of the late 18th and 19th century directories at the IOL have been consulted those covering 1901 onwards have not. I’ve also recently discovered that there is an extensive collection also in the Humanities section of the British Library which has not been looked at all and which may provide interesting cross-references.

The India Office Library also contains a large collection of the India List, an official directory published at least annually, some of which contain information on the uncovenanted civil servants (ie those recruited locally rather than from Great Britain), including writers at the Bengal Secretariat, customs officers, post office clerks, police clerks, etc.

The bland transcriptions that follow do not do justice to the experience of rummaging through the directories themselves and anyone who has access to the libraries listed on the site is recommended to go and have a look for themselves. Alternatively, you can get CD-ROM facsimiles of the 1830 East India Register and Directory and the 1895 Thacker’s Indian Directory for a reasonable price from http://www.archivecdbooks.org.
