ANNUAL LISTS OF UNCOVENANTED CIVIL SERVANTS

Uncovenanted Civil Servants were those recruited locally in India rather than through the training college in England, and were therefore consigned to the more menial tasks, such as that of Writer or copy clerk.
The library index gives the following blanket description of the annual lists:
IOR L/F/10 : Annual lists of uncovenanted civil servants arranged by province or department covering 1818 - 1900.
Volume L/F/10/33 was consulted but did not appear to give lists of locally enrolled servants and a thorough search revealed no Deefholts.
The earliest volumes dedicated to uncovenanted servants appear to be L/F/10/70 (1849-1852), L/F/10/72 (1856) and L/F/10/75 (1859), from which the following were extracted.
L/F/10/76 (1863) is in a different format. Although more comprehensive (including native uncovenanted servants) it is not indexed biographically and no Deefholts were located.

Observations:
[1] Only R. Deefholts of the GPO (= Robert) is mentioned in 1849 although Richard was evidently already working at the Bengal Secretariat.
[2] F. Deefholts (= Frederick Richard) married in August 1851 aged 19 thus he must have been born between May and August 1832. His wife died in early 1852.
[3] Between 1850 and 1852 R. Deefholts (First Class Writer) secured an additional personal allowance of Rs.50 per month - a 62.5% increase! This is explained by his memo regarding pay [see extracts from Despatches].
[4] There is no return for 1851.
